Educational Philosophy and Approach

The principal focus of Walatowa High’s academic program is early college preparation, including dual credit coursework. Support for the charter school’s academic program has been received from New Mexico State Public Education Department and NMPED Public Education Commission, Pueblo of Jemez Administration and Pueblo of Zia Administration. The pre-college focused curriculum also emphasizes the value of the community’s( Jemez, Zia and Jemez Valley Corridor) culture, and traditions. From the outset, the school founders, administrators, faculty and governance council have recognized that young people who understand their identity and appreciate their unique heritage are the best-equipped to become effective students and citizens.

Students are challenged with advanced courses in core subject areas and enter the dual credit program by their junior year of high school. WHCS maintains strong partnerships with post-secondary institutions to ensure the implementation of our college and career preparation program. Partnership such as University of New Mexico, Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute, Institute of American Indian Arts, Central New Mexico College, Eastern New Mexico University, New Mexico State University, UNM-Los Alamos, and Arizona University. In additon, through the Gear UP NM program, Exemplary Program and Federal Programs, Walatowa has been able to bring parents and students together in preperation for post-secondary enrollment
